There is no data available on 2 -(2 -(2-butoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol. There is data available on closely related analogues A full and detailed justification for a category approach for meeting the individual data requirements for glycol ethers is included as an attachment in chapter 13 to the lead registrant dossier. From this analysis there is clear evidence across the whole category that the E series glycol ethers do not show skin sensitising properties. Extrapolation of experimental data from a similar member of the glycol ether family (in this case another triethylene glycol alkyl ether) is scientifically justified.

A study was carried out with the substance 2 -(2 -butoxyethoxy)ethanol, which broadly followed the requirements of a guideline M&K skin sensitisation study. No adverse skin sensitisation reactions were observed. Brake Fluid 500 DOT 4, a mixture of borated and non-borated triethylene glycol methyl ether, was tested for skin sensitisation using the Guinea pig Magnusson and Kligman method. No evidence of skin sensitisation was seen in the study. Because of the structural similarity of these two substances and the overall body of evidence of the propensity of glycol ethers to cause skin sensitisation, these results can be reliably be interpolated to the substance 2 -(2 -(2 -butoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol.
