Hydrolysis

According to Annex VIII (Paragraph 9.2.2, Column 2) of the REACh regulation 1907/2006 a test on hydrolysis does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable or highly insoluble in water. In addition alcohols are generally resistant to aqueous environmental hydrolysis. Therefore, 3 -methylbutan-1-ol is not expected to hydrolyze in the environment.

Biodegradation

Biodegradation in water: screening test:

The ready biodegradability of the test substance itself was examined according to the OECD 301 F (Ready Biodegradability: Manometric Respirometric Test). The test substance was degraded 84 % in 27 days and the 10 days window criteria was fulfilled. The test substance was found to be readily-biodegradable under test conditions. The ready biodegradability of the test item was further assessed using a read-across category approach based on grouping of substances. The surrogate test substances were found to be readily biodegradable and a weight of evidence approach was applied.

 

Biodegradation in water and sediment

The substance is considered as readily biodegradable. Therefore, no further testing on biodegradation is required according to Annex IX (Paragraph 9.2.1, Column 2) of the REACh regulation 1907/2006. 

 

Biodegradation in soil

The substance is considered as readily biodegradable. Therefore, no further testing on biodegradation is required according to Annex IX (Paragraph 9.2.1, Column 2) of the REACh regulation 1907/2006. 

 

Bioaccumulation

Bioaccumulation: aquatic/sediment

Significant accumulation of the test substance in organisms is not to be expected. For 3 -methylbutan-1-ol was determined a log Kow= 1.35 (at pH ca. 6.5 and room temperature).

 

Bioaccumulation terrestrial

Data on terrestrial bioaccumulation in soil are not required for REACh registration.

 

Transport and distribution

Adsorption/Desorption

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the study need not be conducted if the substance has a low potential for adsorption (e.g. the substance has a low octanol water partition coefficient), or the substance and its relevant degradation products decompose rapidly. The substance has a log Kow < 3 and is considered to be readily biodegradable.Testing is therefore not required.
