The substance is not stable in the environment. A study on hydrolysis was performed according to the OECD guideline 111. A half-life of < 2 min was determined at pH 4, 7 and 9 and ambient temperature. Identified hydrolysis products were chloride, sulphite and sulphate.

Additionally hydrolysis of the substance was investigated in the gas phase. Depending on humidity half-lives of 1.4 minutes (74% relative humidity) to 5.9 minutes (28% relative humidity) were obtained. The reaction products were HCl and SO2.
