Description of key information

Non flammable upon ignition.
The substance has no pyrophoric properties and does not liberate flammable gases on contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Non flammable liquid.

Based on chemical structure and experience in handling and use pyrophoric properties are not to be expected.

Thionyl dichloride hydrolyses in water to form sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride. Neither sulphur dioxide nor hydrogen chloride is flammable. So reaction of thionyl dichloride with water does not lead to the development of any gas which may be flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Thionyl dichloride is a non flammable liquid.

Based on chemical structure and experience in handling and use pyrophoric properties are not to be expected.
