Description of key information

The rate constants for hydrolysis at 25 °C are 0.000137/hour (3.80 x 10-8/second), and 0.00116/hour (3.21 x 10-7/second) at pH 4 and 9, respectively, and no rate constant was determined for the test item at pH 7. The half-life for hydrolysis at 25 °C are 211 days, > 1 year, and 25.0 days at pH 4, 7, and 9, respectively.  
Hydrolysis potential also was estimated using the EPIWIN HYDROWIN Program (v2.00). This estimation indicates the following data: Half-Life at pH 8: 1.474 years; Half-Life at pH 7: 14.745 years

TXIB is a branched chain ester with some degree of steric hindrance at the ester group. It is well documented in the literature that esters hydrolyse very slowly at room temperature at neutral pHs in the absense of catalysts. Esters can be hydrolyzed rapidly at elevated temperatures at high pHs. or in the presence of enzyme catalysts. TXIB has for years been used in aqueous formulations, with the practical knowledge that TXIB is stable in commercial aqeous formulations. The hydrolysis as a function of pH of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate (TXIB) (CAS 6846-50-0) has been determined using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method 111 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 13 April2004. The rate constants for the test item for hydrolysis testing performed directly at 25 °C are 0.000137/hour (3.80 x 10-8/second), and 0.00116/hour (3.21 x 10-7/second) at pH 4 and 9, respectively, and no rate constant was determined for the test item at pH 7. The half-life for hydrolysis at 25 °C are 211 days, > 1 year, and 25.0 days at pH 4, 7, and 9, respectively.
