A GLP compliant study was performed to determine the potential for biodegradation of the test item in water by the carbon dioxide evolution method following OECD Test Guideline 301B (BASF SE, 2012). The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released upon biodegradation of the test item and a reference substance, analine, was measured. A measured volume of inoculated mineral medium, containing 30 mg/L (10-20 mg DOC or TOC/L) of the test substance, as the nominal sole source of organic carbon is aerated by the passage of carbon dioxide-free air at a controlled rate in the dark and in diffuse light. Degradation was followed over 28 days by determining the carbon dioxide produced. The carbon dioxide produced from the test substance (corrected for that derived from the blank inoculum) is expressed as a percentage of ThCO2. The selected test concentration was tested in an additional inhibition control test assay and no toxic effects to the microorganisms were observed. The degree of biodegradation of the test substance at the end of the ten-day window was 60 -70 % CO2/ThCO2 and the degree of biodegradation of the test substance at the end of exposure was (mean value) 90-100 % CO2/ThCO2. The degree of biodegradation of the reference substance (aniline) after 14 days was 80 % CO2/ThCO2. The results in this study are consistent with all validity criteria and the test is valid according to the test guideline of this study. The results show that the test substance is readily biodegradable.
