Description of key information

Sodium (S)-lactate is readily biodegradable and furthermore exhibits only negligible adsorption potential hence is very unlikely to be indirectly emitted to soil via sewage sludge. Direct exposure of soil can be excluded beforehand based on the use patterns (no uses involving direct release to soil). Most notably, sodium (S)-lactate is not hazardous to aquatic organisms: Any effects seen in aquatic toxicity studies with lactic acid can be attributed to a pH effect. Neutral lactate, however, does not exert any adverse effects on environmental organisms at concentration ranges relevant for testing, classification & labelling, and risk assessment. Applying the equilibrium partitioning method (EPM), the conclusion of no hazard can be extrapolated to the terrestrial compartment. Thus, the criteria of REACH Annex IX, point 9.4, column 2 are fulfilled (insignificant exposure of soil, hazard conclusion via EPM), whereupon testing of effects on terrestrial organisms is not required.
