Description of key information

Freshwater aquatic toxicity studies with TREGDMA were conducted in fish, invertebrates, and algal species.

Short-term toxicity to fish

In a 96-h acute toxicity study according to OECD guideline 203, adopted 17th July 1992, Danio rerio (Zebra fish) were exposed to TREGDMA at nominal and measured concentrations of 0 (control), 99.5, 17.2, 30.9, 55.6 and 100.0 mg/L under static renewal conditions.

The measured concentrations differed at maximum 11.8% from nominal concentrations.

The 96-h LC50 was 16.4 mg/L (based on nominal concentration). The 96 h-NOEC was 9.5 mg/L.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

No data on short-term toxicity of TREGDMA are available. In accordance with REACH regulation Annex VII, 9.1.1., column 1, long-term toxicity data are provided instead.

Toxicity to aquatic algae

In a 72 hour acute toxicity study, the cultures of Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata strain 61.81 SAG were exposed to Triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate at nominal concentrations of 0 (control), 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L under static conditions in accordance with the OECD guideline 201, adopted March 23, 2006, corrected July 28, 2011.

The NOEC, EC10 and EC50 values based on growth rate were 18.6, 61.0 mg/L and > 100 mg/L, respectively.

Long-term toxicity to fish

Long-term testing in fish is waived for TREGDMA.

According to REACH regulation Annex IX 9.1, column 2, a study on long term toxicity to fish is not required as based on available aquatic toxicity studies no concern was indicated in the generic exposure assessment using conservative parameters (PEC/PENEC < 1).

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

The 21-day-chronic toxicity of TREGDMA (95.8% a.i.) to Daphnia magna was studied under static renewal conditions according to OECD Guideline 211, adopted 03 October 2008, and EU test method C.20, 30 May 2008. Daphnids were exposed to control, and test chemical at nominal concentrations of 1.0, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 mg/L.  The 21 day EC50 based on sublethal effects (reproduction) was 51.9 mg/L.  The 21-day NOEC based on reproduction and adult mortality was 32 mg/L. The 21-day EC10 based on reproduction was 30.2 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms

Toxicity to microorganisms testing is waived for TREGDMA since it is classified as readily biodegradable at an application concentration (17.03 mg/L), which is greater than the predicted environmental concentration (PEC) in the influent of the sewage treatment plant (STP).

In conclusion, the lowest aquatic toxicity value for TREGDMA was the96-h LC50 of 16.4 mg/L (nominal) inDanio rerio (Zebra fish).
