Justification:

4-aminophenol is not readily biodegradable with non-adapted sludge, but inherently biodegradable with aniline adapted sludge. Based on an understanding of the physical-chemical properties of this substance and the existing structure-activity relationships available within the expert systems cited, hydrolysis is not expected to be a relevant degradation mechanism. Hydrolysis will not be an important removal process since this substance lacks the appropriate reactive functional groups for this degradation mechanism. The substance degrades primarily via abiotic processes and to a much lesser extent via biotic processes such as microbial degradation. Abiotic degradation occurs rapidly when the substance is exposed to light and oxygen. Evaluation of the degradation products with QSAR indicate that the transformed products are also readily biodegradable

Based on a fish bioconcentration experimental study (BCF <= 46) with reported bioconcentration factors (BCF) less than 2000 L/kg, at two different exposure levels, there is a low bioaccumulation potential for this substance in aquatic organisms. In addition, based on shake-flask method the log Pow was determined to be - 0.09 ± 0.01 at 25°C ± 1°C.

Evaluation of the degradation products with QSAR indicate that the transformed products are not expected to be bioacumulative

Based on classified as mutagenic cat 2 and chronic toxicity classification of STOT RE 2 the substance meets the criteria for toxicity.

Therefore even though the substance is toxic there is no potential to bioaccumulate and the substance is inherently biodegrable. Abiotic degradation occurs rapidly when the substance is exposed to light and oxygen.
