Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) is a nitric acid ester of a tetrahydric alcohol, pentaerythritol. Crystalline PETN has a melting point of 140° C and a specific gravity of 1.77 at 20° C (Merck, 1983). It is insoluble in water slightly soluble in alcohol, and soluble in acetone (von Oettingen et al, 1944).
