Description of key information

According to the literature, the test material decomposes at a temperature of 135 °C.  However, the boiling point referred to in the literature may not be appropriate for this type of hydrated inorganic salt.  Upon heating, the nonahydrate will initially release water promoting the aluminium nitrate to dissolve in its own hydrate water at 73.5 ⁰C.  Further heating will then promote the release of water vapour.  It is this loss of water vapour which is referred to in the literature and not the boiling point of aluminium nitrate.  Differential thermal analysis (DTA) on the substance has also shown that one thermal event occur at 73.5 ⁰C.  No further thermal events are observed below 200 ⁰C.
