Additional information

There is no toxicity test of retinyl propionate on terrestrial organisms available. In addition, retinyl palmitate has a high calculated log Pow of 15.51 and a water solubility of < 1 mg/L and is therefore likely to adsorb to activated sludge. However, as the substance is very likely to be used by organism such as bacteria as a food source (although it is not readily biodegradable) and in addition, as the degradation products retinol and palmitic acid are also naturally occurring substances, no negative effects on terrestrial organisms are to be expected. Furthermore, the metabolism of retinyl palmitate is also highly regulated by the organism itself, preventing it from any possible effects due to the metabolites retinol and/or palmitic acid.

Especially under the circumstances when activated sludge us transferred to the field, retinyl palmitate will be very rapid photodegraded with a calculated half-life of only 55 min (AOPWIN 1.92).
