The acute toxicity of 4-Nitrophenol to invertebrates is described in various publications and has been extensively reviewed by international groups of experts, i.e. BUA report No.75 (1992) and IPCS CICAD (2000). Most of the studies evaluated in the previously mentioned reports were conducted according to different guidelines or standardised methods such as OECD 202, DIN 38 412/11 or US EPA 1975. As test organisms the water flea species Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa were used. The test durations were 3, 24 and 48 hours. The examined effects were mobility or lethality. In the daphnia tests for mobility 24h-EC0 values of 2 -7 mg/L and 24h-EC50 values of 10 -12 mg/L were recorded (Andrae et al. 1981, Bringmann & Kühn 1982, Kühn et al. 1988). The 48h-EC0 value was determined to be 1 mg/L and the 48h-EC50 was 4.7 mg/L (Kühn et al 1988). In the Daphnia test for lethality the 48h-LC50 values were reported to be 7.68 and 22 mg/L (LeBlanc 1980, Keen & Baillod 1985).
