Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

In an experimental study, conducted in 2005, GLP-compliant and in accordance with OECD guideline 301B, biodegradability of Allantoin was tested in a CO2 -evolution test. Degradation of Allantoin was 10% after 2.5 days, 60% after 6 days and 76% after 28 days. The 10 d-window was fulfilled and Allantoin was regarded as being readily biodegradable.

In an earlier test, the biodegradability of Allantoin was tested using the Zahn-Wellens method, in accordance with DIN 38412 -25. In this test, degradation of Allantoin was observed to be 92% after 5 days and 95% after 10 days.

It can therefore be concluded from the results of the 301B study, with supporting evidence from the Zahn-Wellens test, that Allantoin is readily biodegradable.
