Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Two studies have been identified as having assessed the ready biodegradability of TBHP. Both studies followed an OECD guideline and were performed under GLP standards, but one is considered more reliable as it included assessment of toxicity to the microbial inoculum.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

The ready biodegradability of TBHP has been assessed in OECD guideline (301B and 301D) studies using non-adapted activated sludge inoculum. The 301B study included an assessment of TBHP toxicity to the inoculum: although partial inhibition was seen early in the test period at concentrations equivalent to 18.9 and 37.7 mg TBHP per litre, this was insufficient to account for the observed absence of biodegradation. Thus a conclusion that TBHP is not readily biodegradable is appropriate (and the OECD 301D study supports this conclusion).
