Description of key information
As sulphur hexafluoride is a gas, the performance of conventional skin and eye irritation studies is not feasible. Available acute and repeated inhalation toxicity studies indicate that the substance is not a respiratory tract irritant.

Additional information
The gaseous nature of sulphur hexafluoride precludes the conduct of conventional skin and eye irritation tests in animals. No signs of respiratory tract irritation were observed in the available acute and repeated dose (28-days) inhalation studies, indicating that the substance is not a respiratory tract irritant.
The possibility of ophthalmologic use of SF6 was assessed in a number of studies (see specific investigations). The results indicate that SF6 as such is not an eye irritant.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on the gaseous nature of sulphur hexafluoride and the absence of signs indicating respiratory tract irritation in available acute and repeated dose inhalation studies, classification for skin, eye and respiratory tract irritation is not warranted in accordance with EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
