Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

No studies investigating the adsorption/desorption behaviour of Sorbitan monolaurate, ethoxylated (CAS No. 9005-64-5) are available. Using KOCWIN Program (v2.00), log Koc values from 1.7 to 2.6 were calculated for the main constituents, based on molecular connectivity index (MCI) (Kampara, 2012). The calculated values indicate low adsorption potential, which increases with fatty acid chain length and degree of ethoxylation. However, the molecular structure also indicates a potential of surface active properties, which are not taken into account by the model calculation. The adsorption of non-ionic surfactants to soil is generally high, as shown experimentally for Sorbitan polyethoxylate (Tween 80) (Chu and So, 2001; Laha et al, 2009 and references therein). Since the substance is surface active and a UVCB, testing is unlikely to provide more meaningful results. Additionally, the substance is readily biodegradable and the hazard assessment for all environmental compartments (aquatic, sediment and terrestrial) indicates no hazard (acute EC50 values and chronic NOEC > 1 mg/L).

Thus, based on the tendency given by the calculated values in combination with the surface active properties, Sorbitan monolaurate, ethoxylated has potential to adsorb.
