There are no data available with the registered substance triethoxy(3-thiocyanatopropyl)silane CAS 34708-08-2. Therefore a long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates study OECD TG 211 is proposed.

A long-term toxicity to invertebrates study is proposed because the short-term aquatic invertebrate data determined a 24 hour EC50 value of 29 mg/L, which represents a similar magnitude of short-term toxicity obtained with the fish study, where an LC50 value in the range 10 to 18 mg/L was determined. Therefore, taking into consideration animal welfare and the objective to reduce testing with vertebrates, it is proposed to conduct a long-term aquatic toxicity study with invertebrates rather than with fish. It is additionally proposed to conduct a Dose Range Finding (DRF) study during the OECD TG 211, the results of which will be compared with the available short-term toxicity to invertebrates study to determine the most appropriate concentration range, and with the short-term toxicity to fish study to confirm the most sensitive trophic level.

In the meantime, a PNEC has been derived for the purpose of chemical safety assessment using the lowest EC/LC50 value in the short-term aquatic toxicity studies, which in this case is a conservative 96 hour 10 mg/l with fish. An assessment factor of 1000 was applied to derive the freshwater PNEC using the short-term fish result.
