Additional information

For the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates one study with 2-methoxyethyl acrylate and one study with the analogue substance ethyl acrylate (CAS 140-88-5) are available.

In the key study, the toxicity of 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (CAS 3121-61-7) to Daphnia magna was investigated according to OECD guideline 202 and GLP under static conditions (Harris, 2012). Analytical determination of the test substance concentrations (1.0, 1.8, 3.2, 5.6 and 10 mg/L) showed measured test concentrations in a range of 102 - 111% of nominal values. As a result, an EC50 (48h) of 6.7 mg/L (nominal) was determined and a NOEC of 3.2 mg/L (nominal) was reported.

In addition, a supporting study investigating the structurally analogue substance ethyl acrylate (CAS 140-88-5) is reported (Staples et al., 2000). This study was carried out according to US EPA guideline OTS 797.1300 and GLP under flow-through conditions with Daphnia magna as test organism. Nominal test concentrations of 0.90, 1.8, 3.8, 7.5 and 15 mg/L were applied, with corresponding measured concentrations of 0.75, 1.7, 3.4, 6.3 and 12 mg/L. As a result, an EC50 (48h) of 7.9 mg/L (measured, arithm. mean) was determined.

In accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 read-across to another structurally related analogue substance was conducted. Read-across data from ethyl acrylate (CAS 140 -88 -5) were used, which was considered suitable for read-across.

Due to structural and property similarities with the tested analogue substance, it can be concluded that the above result also applies to 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (CAS 3121-61-7). For details see analogue justification in the overall summary of Chap 6.1 and in Chapter 13 of the Technical Dossier.
