Description of key information

Sodium lactate fully dissociates into Na+ ions and lactate in aqueous environments. The biodegradation of Sodium lactate in the environment can be understood in terms of the biodegradation of lactic acid and since studies for sodium has been waived because it is an inorganic substance.

Based on a key study for biodegradability and a supporting study investigating the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), lactic acid is considered to be readily biodegradable, and therefore Sodium lactate is considered to be readily biodegradable as well. Accordingly, further degradation tests (in surface water, sediment, or soil) are not required.
