Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Sodium 2-hydroxyethanesulphonate was tested in zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio) over 96 hours in a static system. The concentration tested was 100 mg/L and a negative control (0 mg/L). The substance concentration was determined in the 100 mg/L group. The values determined were in the range of ± 10% of the theoretical value. The LC50 of sodium 2-hydroxyethanesulphonate after 96 hours exceeds 100 mg/L under the conditions of this test conducted according OECD guideline no. 203.

In the acute immobilisation test with Daphnia magna STRAUS the effect of the limit concentration (1000 mg/L) of the test item (active content: 57%) was determined. The EC50 of sodium 2-hydroxyethanesulphonate after 48 hours exceeds 570 mg/L under the conditions of a test conducted according OECD guideline no. 202.

Further supportive information is available from old IUCLID data, but without proof. The result from the OECD guideline study was chosen as key parameter.

In a study according OECD guideline no. 201 the effects of the test item Sodium 2-hydroxyethanesulphonate on the growth of the freshwater green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus were tested. No inhibiting effects on specific growth rate and yield were found in the limit concentration of 100 mg/L (NOEC). The EC50-values for specific growth rate inhibition (ErC50) and inhibition of yield (EyC50) after 72 h were > 100 mg/L.

The Daphnia magna Reproduction test (Semi-Static, 21 d) of Sodium 2-hydroxyethanesulphonate was conducted as a limit test with the nominal test item concentration 100 mg/L according to OECD 211. Test solutions were renewed 3 times per week. Aim of the Daphnia magna Reproduction test over 21 days was to assess effects on the reproduction capacity and other test item-related effects on parameters such as the intrinsic rate of natural increase, adult mortality, the occurrence of aborted eggs and stillborn juveniles, time of production of first brood, body weight and length of the parent animals.

The limit concentrationand the control were analytically verified via HPLC of samples on days 0, 12, 19 (fresh media, 0 h) and on days 2, 14, 21 (old media, 48 h). The recoveries were in the range of 80 to 88 % of the nominal values of the active ingredient. All effect values are given based on the nominal test item concentrations of Sodium 2-hydroxyethanesulphonate.

No statistically significant effects were determined. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) and the Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) were assessed at: NOEC: 100 mg/L , LOEC: > 100 mg/L.

The toxicity of Sodium 2-hydroxyethanesulphonate to microorganisms was investigated in a study according to OECD Guidline no. 209 and according to GLP (activated sludge respiration inhibition test).

The EC50- value is > 1000 mg/L an the NOEC is 1000 mg/L in the activated sludge respiration inhibition test.
