The biodegradability of 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol is assessed by a weight-of-evidence approach based on experimental and additional estimation data:

- A test according to OECD guideline 301A was performed using the analogous substance 2-Ethoxyethylamin, CAS 110-76-9 (BASF SE 1996). This read-across is possible, because both substances have similar physico-chemical properties and a comparable molecular structure with the same functional groups. As inoculum non-adapted municipal sludge was used. After 17 days a DOC removal of 90 -100% was measured.

 

- In a test according to OECD guideline 302B using industrial activated sludge a DOC removal of 84% after 28 days was found for the target chemical itself (BASF, 1980).

- Furthermore, 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol turned out to be biodegradable (100 % DOC-elimination; 21‑d) in a die-away test using a microbial population from River Aire in central Leeds (Emtiazi, 1994).

According to OECD TG 306 (Biodegradability in seawater) using natural seawater as inoculum (Eide-Haugmo et al. 2009, 2012) the chemical was experimentally determined to be poorly biodegradable (< 1% after28 d; O2 -consumption) under marine conditions.

(Q)SAR calculations using the estimation models CATABOL 301C (v02.08), Kinetic 301B (v02.09) and the 301F kinetic model (v13.16) which are implemented within the OASIS Catalogic v5.11.17 calculation program, revealed biodegradation rates of 82% [BOD acc. to OECD 301C] and 81% [CO2-evolution acc. to OECD 301B] and 95% [BOD acc. to OECD 301F] respectively (BASF SE, 2015).

In addition, a second QSAR model for predicting biodegradation (EPI Suite v4.11, Biowin v4.10) the chemical is calculated to be readily biodegradable (BASF SE 2015).

 

In summary, the available data indicate 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol to be readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).
