Description of key information

A 35 d NOEC (reproduction) of 9.4 mg/L (measured) was determined for the read across substance methyl methacrylate. A 35 d NOEC of 10 mg/L was determined for the hydrolysis product methacrylic acid.

Additional information

There is no data on the chronic toxicity of cyclohexyl methacrylate available.However, for the structurally related methyl methacrylate (CAS# 80-62-6) a 35-d early life stage test, using Danio rerio, exists (OECD guideline 210) (CEFIC Methacrylate Toxicology Committee, 2002).The test was conducted under flow through conditions at concentrations of 9.38, 18.8, 37.5, 75.0 and 150.0 mg/L. The 35 day NOEC for hatching success, length and weight was determined as 9.4 mg/L, based on measured concentrations. The LOEC and LC50 were determined to be 18.8 mg/L and 33.7 mg/L, respectively.

There is also a 35-d early life stage test available for the hydrolysis product methacrylic acid (CAS# 79-41-4). The early life stage of zebra fish (Danio rerio) was studied under flow-through conditions (CEFIC Methacrylate Toxicology Committee, 2002). Fertilized eggs of Zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to five concentrations of the test substance under flow-through conditions for a period of 35 d. Hatching rate, mortality of embryos, yolk sac larvae, free feeding larvae and juvenile fish as well as lengths and group weights at the end of the test were determined.The test was performed in accordance with the OECD guideline 210.Fertilized eggs/embryos (100 fertilized eggs) were exposed to the test substance at nominal concentrations of 0, 2.0, 4.5, 10, 23 and 51 mg/L. No statistically significant effect on hatching success could be observed at any concentration tested. Methacrylic acid impaired survival mainly at the life stage of free feeding larvae; post hatch success was decreased significantly at 23 mg/L and higher concentrations. At the highest concentration of 51 mg/L, also growth was reduced significantly. Thus, after 35 days (study termination) the NOEC was observed with 10 mg/L, the LOEC with 23 mg/L.
