Results of guideline studies with no deviations and compliance with GLP was used to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of the Modified Small Vinyl Ester. Following conclusions are drawn for Modified Small Vinyl Ester.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester consists mainly of bisGMA (CAS No 1565-94-2) and monomaleic bisGMA.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester has no acid or alkaline reserve.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester is a clear light yellow-greenish to light brown, highly viscous liquid.

The melting temperature (glass transition) of Modified Small Vinyl Ester is 4 °C (277 K).

Modified Small Vinyl Ester has no boiling temperature. Polymerisation begins at 100 °C.

The density of Modified Small Vinyl Ester at 20 ºC is 1.18 g/cm3 (1.18 x E+003 kg/m3).

The vapour pressure of Modified Small Vinyl Ester was estimated to lower than 2 x E-010 Pa, based on QSAR estimations for the four major constituents (bisGMA, monomaleic bisGMA, epoxy monoGMA and dihydroxy monoGMA).

The octanol-water partition coefficient (as log Pow) of Modified Small Vinyl Ester was determined to 4.3 at neutral pH and 25 °C, based on HPLC data for the two major constituents (bisGMA and monomaleic bisGMA).

Water solubility of Modified Small Vinyl Ester was calculated to 8.02 mg/L as a weighted average using data from a guideline study.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester is soluble in organic solvents. Modified Small Vinyl Ester is marketed as a 40-60% solution in a reactive diluent.

The surface tension of Modified Small Vinyl Ester was determined to 61.1 mN/m at 20 °C for an aqueous solution at 90% saturation. Modified Small Vinyl Ester is not surface active.

The flash-point of Modified Small Vinyl Ester was determined to ≥ 137.5 °C.

The self-ignition temperature of Modified Small Vinyl Ester was determined to 475 °C at 1003.0 – 1009.8 hPa.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester is not flammable in contact with water and is not pyrophoric in contact with air. Modified Small Vinyl Ester does not contain structural alerts that are connected with spontaneous ignition in air and/or evolution of flammable gases in contact with water, cf. Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester is non explosive. Modified Small Vinyl Ester does not contain structural alerts that are connected with explosive properties, cf. Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester is non oxidising. Modified Small Vinyl Ester does not contain structural alerts that are connected with oxidising properties, cf. Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards.

Modified Small Vinyl Ester is stable in organic solvents. During use Modified Small Vinyl Ester polymerises to an insoluble polymer.

One single dissociation value could not be determined for Modified Small Vinyl Ester due to its chemical composition. Instead the pKa values were calculated using the Perrin method for the acidic and basic groups in the two main constituents of Modified Small Vinyl Ester (bisGMa and monomaleic bisGMA). The calculated pKa values were 2.5; 4.4-5.5 (4 values); and 13.0-13.6 (3 values).

The kinematic viscosity of Modified Small Vinyl Ester was determined to > 100,500 cSt (mm2/s) at 20 °C.
