Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Interpretation of results:
not readily biodegradable
Conclusions:
2-chlorobenzonitrile is hardly degradable.
Executive summary:

The biodegradability of o-chlorobenzonitrile was determined by the method described in the OECD Guideline 301B; Ready biodegradability: Modified Sturm Test. The test substance was prepared in two concentrations (10 and 21 mg/L) in triplicate. Test samples were inoculated with non-adapted activated sludge organisms from a domestic STP and incubated for 28 days at 20 +/- 2 °C on an orbital shaking machine. Degradation was followed by means of CO2 release from the test samples.

A control test conducted with sodium acetate showed that the activity of the inoculum was sufficient and that no significant effects on the test substance on this activity were found.

The test substance was hardly degraded (6.8 % and 1.2 % degradation after 28 days at 10 mg/l and 21 mg/L, respectively). 2-chlorobenzonitrile had no effect on the degradation of acetate.
