Description of key information

An alga growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was performed under static conditions according to OECD 201 and GLP guidelines (reliability 1). Out of a stock solution of 80.0 mg/L five concentrations were tested in a geometrical series. The concentration levels and the control were analytically verified by LC-MS at the start and the end of the 72 hours exposure period.

The test item lowered the pH value of the test solutions at concentrations of nominal 32 and 80 mg/L. The comparison of the results of treatments with and without adjustment of the pH showed that the toxicity is only based on the influence of pH. In the concentrations with adjusted pH no effect was observed up to 89.7 mg/L test substance (measured concentration):

NOEC = 89.7 mg/L (growth rate and inhibition of yield)

EC50 > 89.7 mg/L (growth rate and inhibition of yield)

A higher tier study, short-term toxicity to fish (Danio rerio) performed according to the guideline of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Germany) and GLP guideline (reliabilty 1) is available. Seven concentration levels up to 10 000 mg/L (nominal), pH adjusted, were investigated. The concentrations were daily verified analytically. There was no mortality in the control as well as in treated fish at any observation time point. No behaviourial abnormalities were observed during the 96 hour exposure period:

LC0 > 10 000 mg/L

LC50 > 10 000 mg/L

Two trophic levels and taxa were well investigated and covered. An additional study on aquatic invertebrates is scientifically not necessary and a QSAR prediction model using ECOSAR version 1.11 was applied instead.

Prediction: EC50 (daphnia) = 12 964 mg/L
