The toxicity of 1,4 -Butynediol to aquatic organisms has been studied according to a number of reliable guideline methods under non-GLP conditions. The results of these studies indicate that 1,4 -Butynediol exhibits a moderate degree of toxicity in the aquatic environment, with a 48 hour EC50 in invertebrates (Daphnia magna) of 26.8 mg/L (BASF, 1987) and a 96 hour LC50 in freshwater fish (Pimephales promelas) of 53.6 mg/L (Veith, et. al., 1989).
