Since the substance rapidly hydrolyses in water, its environmental fate and distribution will be based on its primary degradate, terephthalic acid.

The relevant regression equation within KOCWIN v2.0 (US EPA, 2008) for this test substance is: log Koc = 0.55313 log Kow + 0.9251 + correction factors (where n= 447, r2 = 0.855). This QSAR is preferred for use since an experimental value of log Kow was available for TPA, log Kow =2.0 (neutral form), and a correction factor is applied to account for TPA being an acid and therefore able to ionise. Since TPA lies within the domain of the QSAR as defined by the log Kow and MW ranges, its prediction is considered valid for use.
