Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The partition coefficient n-octanol / water (Kow) of decamethylenediamine was determined according to OECD guideline no. 117 [2004] and EU test method A.8 [2008] with the HPLC method. The result was partition coefficient n-octanol / water (Kow) at 25 °C and pH 7.5: Kow = 1.995 / log Kow = 0.3.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
0.3
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

The study reflects the properties of the partially dissociated molecule. Measurement of undissociated decamethylenediamine would have required a pH value too high to be tolerated by the HPLC column. Therefore the pH was adjusted to 7.5 with a buffer as recommended in OECD TG 117. As dissociation leads to increased concentrations in the aqueous phase, a higher log Kow has to be expected for the undissociated molecule. However, this higher log Kow would not reflect the behaviour in the environment where approximately neutral pH values prevail.
