A study was performed to assess the biodegradability of the diisopropylamine (DIPA) in an aerobic aqueous medium according to GLP conditions (Roulstone, 2013). The method followed was designed to be compatible with the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (2001) No 303A “Simulation Test - Aerobic Sewage Treatment: Activated Sludge Units” and US EPA Fate, Transport, and Transformation Test Guidelines OPPTS 835.3220 Porous Pot Test.

Activated sewage sludge micro-organisms were exposed to the test item at a nominal concentration of 28.6 mg/L under continuous flow conditions at temperatures of between 18 and 20 °C from Day 14 to Day 44. The degradation of the test item was assessed by dissolved organic carbon analyses. Control solutions with inoculum and a reference item, sodium benzoate, were used for validation purposes.

Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) elimination in the control unit was approximately 80% after two weeks and sodium benzoate attained a mean value of greater than 90% biodegradation thereby confirming the suitability of the inoculum and culture conditions.

Based on the results of the DOC analyses conducted throughout the calculation period, DIPA showed a mean elimination of 0%.
