Guanidine carbonate shows moderate effects the aquatic organisms, which were generally out of the relevant range for classification. The primary consumers, represented by aquatic invertebrates seem to be the most susceptible organism group. The NOEC for daphnid reproduction is 2.14 mg/L, while the algal growth rate NOEC is 4 mg/L and the fish NOEC of 133.6 mg/L is above the cut-off level for effect testing (i.e. > 100 mg/L). The same order is indicated by the acute effect levels and the L(E)C50 values are 41, 65 and > 100 mg/L for daphnids, algae and fish, respectively. Further data from guanidine (CAS 113-00-8) support the observation of comparable high sensitivity of aquatic invertebrates. The HSDB (2008) record refers effects levels of the mayfly, a freshwater insect, for which a 48-h LC50 of 2 mg/L is published by Nishiuchi et al (1979). The effects were observed in nymphs (length 9.3 mm, weight 5.6 mg, 25 °C). Converted on the basis of MW = 90.0835 g/mol, referring to an equimolar Guanidinium kation concentration the corresponding effect level of guanidine carbonate would be 3.05 mg/L.
