Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Chloroethylene is an extremely flammable (F+; R12/ Flam. Gas 1) gaseous substance marketed and transported in a liquefied form as gas under pressure. No experimental data for irritation properties of chloroethylene were located or performed by the registrant and, given its physico-chemical properties (i.e. high volatility, high flammability) it is technically not feasible to perform such test using standard test requirements for irritation testing.

Chloroethylene has harmonized at EU level classifications in accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC and with the GHS criteria of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and it is not classified as skin or eye irritant in any of them.

From the data available for chloroethylene, it is likely that high concentrations of chloroethylene in the air may cause irritation of skin, eye or respiratory tract. However, this scenario could be relevant for occupational settings. Moreover, accidental skin and/or eye contact with rapidly expanding chloroethylene gas or vaporizing liquid chloroethylene may take place.

In general, appropriate engineering controls and work practices to reduce employee exposure to the lowest level achievable must be in place with additional suitable skin, eye, face and respiratory protection in work areas and operations with high risks of exposure to chloroethylene.
