Description of key information

The substances in the category are gases and will predominantly partition to the atmosphere, which will limit the aquatic toxicity. Due to the difficulty associated with conducting aquatic toxicity tests, experimental data were available for only one member of this category: Benzene (CAS 71-43-2). The lowest acute and chronic toxicity values for benzene are an 96-hour LC50 for Oncorhynchus mykiss of 5.3 mg/L and a 32-day NOEC for Pimephales promelas of 0.8 mg/L.

In the absence of measured data, data for the other representative constituents of the category were predicted using the QSAR model ECOSAR (Program v1.00 in EPI Suite v4.00). The short term toxicity of the constituents was predicted to range from 6.97 mg/L to 623 mg/L for the different aquatic taxonomic groups.The long term toxicity of the constituents was predicted to range from 0.834 mg/L to 51.5 mg/L for the different aquatic taxonomic groups.

The 96-hour LC50 for benzene for Oncorhynchus mykiss was 5.3 mg/L.

The 48-hour EC50 for benzene for Daphnia magna was 10 mg/L.

The 7-day NOEC for benzene for Ceriodaphnia dubia was 3 mg/L.

The 72-hour EC50 and EC10 for benzene for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were 100 mg/L and 34 mg/L, respectively.
