Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

72h EC10 (Desmodesmus subspicatus, growth rate) = 199 mg/L (measured concentration, EU Method C.3)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
199 mg/L

Additional information

Since no reliable aquatic algae test is available for C8AS NA (CAS 142-31-4), in accordance to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5, a read-across to another category member was performed. Read-across data from C8-isoAS Na homologue (CAS 126-92-1) were used. Since the main factor influencing the toxicity of alkyl sulfates is the carbon chain length, it is expected that toxic effects to algae are comparable for all the C8 homologues.

One GLP study investigating toxic effects of C8-isoAS Na (CAS 126-92-1) to freshwater algae Desmodesmus subspicatus according to EU Method C.3 is available (Scholz 1995). Growth inhibition caused by the test substance was determined after 24, 48 and 72 h of exposure to five test concentrations up to 511 mg/L (measured concentration equal to 900 mg/L of nominal concentration). The results show that the EC50 value for growth rate was above the highest test concentration of 511 mg/L (measured concentration). The EC10 value for growth rate was determined to be 199 mg/L (measured concentration).

Due to structural similarities with the tested category member, it can be concluded that the above results apply also to C8AS Na (CAS 142-31-4).
