Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
relative self-ignition temperature (solids)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
03 February 2011
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.16 (Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Key result
Relative self-ignition temperature:
348 °C
Remarks on result:
other: The air pressure was not provided but since it was explicidly mentioned that it was changed, it can be assumed that the test was performed as normal air pressure.
Conclusions:
The sample does not fulfil the criteria of the transport class 4.2 "self-heating substances" and therefore can be excluded from this hazard class. According to the UN "Manual of test & Criteria", Appendix 6, Screening Procedures, point 5.2, the classification procedure for self-heating substances need not to be applied if the results of a screening test can be adequately correlated with the classification test and an appropriate safety margin is applied. Point 5.2 (a) refers to the Grewer-oven test (VDI guideline 2263, part 1, 1990). A sample volume of 6 cm3 is tested by linear heating under air atmosphere. Following the judgement criterion the execution of the UN test N.4 is only necessary if the onset-temperature in the Screening test is lower than 220 °C. The testing procedure of the Grewer-oven test is comparable with the procedure used in the A.16 test. The A.16 test uses a sample volume of 8 cm3. Therefore the result of the A.16-test is more conservative in safety terms in comparison with the Grewer-oven test. Based on the result of the A.16-test the assessment was performed. The EC-test A.16 showed begin of an exothermic reaction at about 348 °C. Therefore the prescribed tests following UN test N.4 were not necessary.
