Acutely toxic to aquatic organisms. The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

This aquatic toxicity assessment was based on the following data:

The LC50 value of the test substance to Oncorhynchus mykiss was determined to be 3.8 mg/L in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 203 (BASF AG 12F0230/985046, 1998). This value is supported by the outcoming of another GLP guideline study according to OECD 203 with Brachydanio rerio which revealed a LC50 value greater than 2.2 and lower than 4.6 mg/L (BASF 17F0246/925043, 1993).

The result of a flow-through exposure test on Daphnia magna according to OECD 202 revealed an acute EC50 (48h) greater than 100 mg/L (BASF AG 98/0634/53/1, 1998).

The result of a static exposure test on Scenedesmus subspicatus according to OECD 201 determined an acute EC50 (96h) from 27 mg/L for growth rate and an EC10 (growth rate, 72h) value of 8.97 mg/L (BASF AG 98/0634/60/1, 1998).

No data on the toxicity of the test substance to microorganisms are available. Based on its molecular structure, the test substance is considered to be similar to CAS 195008-76-5 and CAS 173011-06-8. Therefore, the EC20 = ca. 1000 mg/L of CAS 173011-06-8 determined in a study according to OECD 209 was applied to cover this endpoint (BASF AG 92/1991/08/1, 1992). Based on these data, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not expected to be anticipated when introduced in appropriate concentrations.
