Materials and methods

Type of study / information:
Literature review of odour thresholds
Endpoint addressed:
respiratory irritation
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The literature has been reviewed to provide quantitative data on the odour thresholds of 214 chemicals. Data on the volatility, solubility, ionisation and water-air distribution ratio at 25ºC are included. A safe dilution factor and an odour safety factor are calculated.
GLP compliance:
no

Results and discussion

Results:
Air odour threshold dicylclopentadiene: 0.0057±1.9 ppm. Safe dilution factor: 720. Odour safety factor (based on TLV of 5 ppm): 870. More than 90% of distracted persons perceive warning of TLV concentration in the air.

Any other information on results incl. tables

Air-dilution odour thresholds. Threshold limit value: 5 ppm v/v. Volatility at 25ºC: 3600 ppm v/v.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Threshold limit value: 5 ppm v/v; Volatility at 25ºC: 3600 ppm v/v; Air odour threshold: 0.0057±1.9 ppm; Safe dilution factor: 720; Odour safety factor: 870; Odour safety class: A (more than 90% of distracted persons perceive warning of TLV concentration in the air)
