Conclusion on classification

1,4 -Butenediol (B2D) should not be classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment according to the criteria laid out in Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 or in Directive 67/548/EEC based on results of an OECD Method 203 short-term fish study = 96 hr LC50 value of >100 mg/L as well as a 96 hr LC0 value of >100 mg/L (BASF AG 2005). In addition, the acute toxicity of 1,4 -butenediol to freshwater invertebrates (Daphnia magna) was tested under non-GLP conditions and yielded a 48 hour EC50 value of 65.2 mg/L, a 48 hour EC0 value of 31.3 mg/L, and a 48 hour EC100 value of 125 mg/L (BASF AG 1988). The short-term toxicity of 1,4 -Butenediol to algae has been studied according to Guideline DIN 38412 under non-GLP conditions using Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name:Desmodesmus subspicatus). The 72 hour EC50 value determined during this test was 290mg/L, the 72 hour EC 10 value was 48 mg/L, and the 72 hour EC90 was 1550 mg/L (BASF AG 1989) and indicates a low degree of toxicity toDesmodesmus subspicatus. The short-term toxicity of 1,4 -Butenediol to microorganisms has been studied according to Guideline DIN 38412 under non-GLP conditions using Pseudomonus putida. The 17 hour EC10 value determined during this test was 8933.7 mg/L (BASF AG 1988). 1,4 -Butenediol has a LogKow of -0.9, and a BCF of 3.16, and is readily biodegradable.
