Additional information

The toxicity of Glycerides, palm-oil mono-, hydrogenated, acetates (CAS No. 93572-32-8) to algae was investigated in a study by Sloman (2012). The test was conducted according to OECD 201, under GLP conditions under a static water regime. Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was exposed to the test substance for 72 h at 23 ± 2°C. Analytical monitoring of the test concentrations was performed. Measured concentrations (0.0225, 0.0381, 0.565, 2.42, 13.9 and 72.6 mg/L) are in some cases above the water solubility value estimated for this substance (1.3-7.4 mg/L). The substance is a complex UVCB and therefore, two representative components were chosen to follow concentrations in the test solutions, which probably were the most water soluble.

After the exposure period, significant growth rate inhibition was observed in treatment groups of 2.42 mg/L, 13.9 and 72.6 mg/L (mean measured concentrations) being 14, 21 and 30%, respectively. Precipitated test substance was observed in those three test solutions (cloudy to very cloudy solutions) and therefore, the observed effects could be caused by adsorption to algal cells, hindering the uptake of nutrients or to turbidity, decreasing the access to light in the test vessels. Nevertheless, since toxicity cannot be ruled out and the reported NOEC (72 h) of 0.565 mg/L (mean measured concentration) is within the water solubility range of the substance (1.3-7.4 mg/L), this value is considered for further assessment.
