Executive summary:

The potential for 1,3,5 -triisopropylbenzene (TIPB) to induce ocular irritation was evaluated in rabbits. A 0.1 mL aliquot was instilled into both eyes of 3 rabbits. Immediately following instillation, the test material was washed from one eye of each rabbit, while the other eye remained unwashed. At 1 hour after treatment, slight irritation was observed in the conjunctivae of all 3 rabbits, and washing did not alter the irritant response. At 24 hours after treatment, slight irritation was observed in the conjunctivae of 2 of 3 rabbits. At 48 hours after treatment, the eyes of all 3 rabbits appeared normal. There was no evidence of corneal opacity of iritis observed at any time during the study. From these data, it was determined that TIPB is a slight ocular irritant.

The hair was clipped from the back of 5 guinea pigs, and a single 0.5 mL sample of TIPB was applied to the area under an occlusive dressing. After 4 hours, the material was washed from the skin, and the area was observed for erythema and edema for the following 2 weeks. At 24 hours after application, mild to moderate erythema and slight edema was observed in 5 of 5 guinea pigs. At the end of the treatment period, there was no sign of erythema or edema in any of the test animals. From these data, it was concluded that TIPB is slightly irritating to the skin of guinea pigs.
