Description of key information

No toxicity to sewage sludge microorganisms was observed at a concentration of 20 mg DOC/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Results are available from the toxicity controls carried out as part of OECD 301B Modified sturm tests. Results are available for Resin acids and rosin acids, Me esters, Resin acids and rosin acids, esters with diethylene glycol, Resin acids and rosin acids, esters with glycerol, Resin acids and rosin acids, hydrogenated, esters with glycerol, Resin acids and rosin acids, esters with pentaerythritol and Resin acids and rosin acids, hydrogenated, esters with pentaerythritol (Inveresk, 2002a). All substances showed no inhibition of sewage sludge microorganisms at 20 mg DOC/L.

A toxicity control was also conducted as part of another OECD 301B study for Resin acids and rosin acids, Me esters (Harlan Laboratories, 2012a). The toxicity control was conducted at a test item concentration of 12.6 mg/L. No inhibition of sewage sludge microorganisms was observed at this concentration.

As no toxicity to microorganisms was observed at the concentrations used for the toxicity controls in any of the biodegradation studies, Rosin ester substances are not considered to be toxic to microorganisms.
