- Endpoint:
- flammable liquids: obsolete as covered by section 'Flash point'
- Type of information:
- other: expert statement
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 04 January 2012- 05 April 2012
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: see 'Remark'
- Remarks:
- In accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, testing was omitted based on the evaluation of structural features and experience in handling. An expert statement rather than a full study was considered sufficient to cover this endpoint. The statement was prepared according to the EC A.13 and UN guidelines and according to the principles of GLP.Nevertheless, according to the ECHA's practical guide 6: "How to report read-across and categories" the maximum for read-cross is 2.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.13 (Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids)
- Version / remarks:
- (2008)
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: United Nations (UN), UN no. ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.5: Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Appendix 6 "Screening procedures" (2009).
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Interpretation of results:
- non flammable
- Remarks:
- Migrated information
- Conclusions:
- Based on expercience during handling and because the molecular structure of the test substance does not contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air, the test substance is considered not pyrophoric (expert statement in accordance with EC A.13 and UN).
- Endpoint:
- flammable liquids: obsolete as covered by section 'Flash point'
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 2010-11-03 - 2011-03-24
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: The GLP study was conducted according to an internationally accepted guideline.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
- Deviations:
- yes
- Remarks:
- The flammability test was conducted using the apparatus set-up only.
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Interpretation of results:
- non flammable
- Remarks:
- Migrated information
- Conclusions:
- The test substance, 1-Phenylethylbenzene, was determined to be non-flammable when in contact with water as there was no exothermicity and no gas evolution observed during the test. There is nothing in the chemical structure of the test substance to suggest that it would react with water in any way,
much less by combustion. No evidence has been found experimentally to suggest any reaction with water. - Executive summary:
The test substance, 1-Phenylethylbenzene, was determined to be non-flammable when in contact with water as there was no exothermicity and no gas evolution observed during the test. There is nothing in the chemical structure of the test substance to suggest that it would react with water in any way, much less by combustion. Expert Statement:
A substance is considered pyrophoric when it ignites within 5min. of coming in contact with air.
The molecular structure of the test substance does not contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air. Moreover the test substance was handled under normal laboratory conditions during the determination of physico-chemical properties. It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite in contact with air.
Description of key information
The test substance, 1-Phenylethylbenzene, was determined to be non-flammable when in contact with water as there was no exothermicity and no gas evolution observed during the test.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
The test substance, 1-Phenylethylbenzene, was determined to be non-flammable when in contact with water as there was no exothermicity and no gas evolution observed during the test.
1,1’-DPE has no structural alerts for pyrophoric properties. The comparison with the example substances listed in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7a, p.122, which are known to be flammable on contact with water, indicates that 1,1’-DPE is highly unlikely to display this property.
Justification for classification or non-classification
1,1 -DPE is not classified as flammable liquid, pyrophoric liquid or substance which in contact with water emits flammable gases.
