Additional information

Data on the acute aquatic toxicity of a number of streams are available for this category. They were obtained from proprietary sources. No data were identified in the published literature. The data from these streams have been read across to the other category members.

The studies were conducted to standard guidelines and according to GLP and so are considered fully reliable for use as key studies. The authors report the results based both on nominal loading rates (WAF) and mean measured concentrations. As the test substance is a hydrocarbon stream with various components reporting a measured concentration could be misleading as the measured concentration does not relate to a concentration of the raw stream. Instead, we have used the results reported as WAF, which better represent the potential toxicity of the test substance.

Classification will be based on WAF data. Aquatic invertebrates had a LL50 range between 1.2 to 13 mg/L. The 96 hour LL50 for fish ranged from 1.1 to 48 mg/L. Algal studies report 72 hour ErL50 of 2.1-12.2 mg/L. Streams are not rapidly degradable and have a Log Kow range >2.4 and <6.5. Under classification and labelling regulations this would lead to a classification of Aquatic Chronic Category 2.
