Additional information

Although tetrairon tris(pyrophosphate) is of low water solubility, a portion of the molecule may dissociate to (or be actively degraded to) orthophosphate (via pyrophosphate) and ferric (Fe3 +) ions in aqueous and biological systems. In order for ferric ions to be bioavailable they must be reduced to ferrous (Fe2+) ions.

Iron and orthophosphate ions are essential micronutrients for plants and animals; they stimulate the growth of water plants (macrophytes) and/or algae (phytoplankton) and are ubiquitous in the environment. Iron and phosphorus (from phosphates) metabolism is homeostatically regulated and as such the potential for bioaccumulation is considered to be minimal.
