Toxicity to fish:

The acute lethal toxicity of Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., Me esters, epoxidized to Danio rerio (Zebrafish) was investigated under static exposure conditions over a period of 96 h according to the guideline OECD 203. At the loading rate of 100 mg/l, none of a total of seven fish died after 96 h of exposure. No mortality was observed in the blank control.Based on these results the LC50is greater than the applied loading rate of 100 mg/l. (BASF, 2012).

In addition, a supporting study is available for the toxicity to fish of Fatty acids, soja, epoxidized, 2-ethylhexyyl esters (CAS 68082-34-8), a similary related structure to fatty acids, C16 -18 and C18 -unsatd., Me esters, epoxidized. The non GLP study was tested according to guideline. Deviations to guideline: test duration 48 instead of 96 hours, oxygen depletion to 54%, but no toxic effects observed up to 3000 mg/l, therefore the reported LC50-data can be regarded as worst case, only three test concentrations, no analytics, a control group is not mentioned. (Henkel, 1988).

Toxicity to daphnia:

The acute toxicity to invertebrates was determined according to OECD 202 as a limit test since the test item is only partially soluble, the water accommodated fraction (WAF) approach was used. No significant effects (≤10% immobilization out of a total of 40 Daphnia) were observed after 24 and 48 h of exposure. Based on these results, the 24 and 48 h EC50 values of Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., Me esters, epoxidized, were >100 mg/l (based on loading rate). The no-observed-effect concentrations (NOEC) for 24 and 48 h of exposure were ≥100 mg/l. 100% immobilization was not detected within 48 h of exposure.

Toxicity to algae:

The purpose of this study according to OECD 201 was to determine the effect of the test item on the growth of the freshwater green alga, Desmodesmus subspicatus. The 72 -h NOELR was estimated to be greater than 100 mg/L and the 72-hour ErC50 was calculated to be also greater than 100 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganism:

The objective of this study according to OECD 209 was to determine the effect of different concentrations of the test item on sewage sludge microorganisms by measuring the respiration rate under defined conditions. The EC10 value was calculated to be greater than 1000 mg/L.
