Additional information

In general menthyl esters like Menthyl acetate are hydrolysed to Menthol and their respective carboxylic acids. Ester hydrolysis is catalysed by classes of enzymes recognized as carboxylesterases or esterases (Heymann 1980). These enzymes occur in most mammalian tissues, but predominate in hepatocytes (WHO 1999). In the study with human hepatocytes (Schneider, 2013) it was shown that Menthyl acetate depletes by about 66 % within one hour.

The experimental log Kow of 4.0 of Menthyl acetate and the relatively low molecular weight of 198.3 g/mol suggest that the compound is rather lipophilic than hydrophylic and good enhancer in skin permeation of 5-Aminolevulinic acid (Songkro et al 2004; Tokuoka et al 2008).
