Toxicity to soil macroorganisms except arthropods

The substance shows no effects up to the limit concentration in acute aquatic toxicity tests. Furthermore, the substance shows no potential for accumulation in soil due to its ready biodegradable properties, its LogPow value and is not ionisable. Therefore,an impact on terrestrial organisms is very unlikely and thus, studies on soil organisms are not required.

However, there are two soil studies available with a fungicide formulation, containing up to 35% pentanols. The results demonstrate that further terrestrial studies with pentanols are not necessary.

In a 14-day acute toxicity study with Eisenia fetida no effects were observed up to 1000 mg test item/kg soil dw (BASF 1996). In a chronic study with Eisenia fetida a NOEC of 305.0 mg test item/kg soil dry weight was determined (BASF 2012). Under the very conservative assumption that these adverse effects are caused by the pentanolic fraction only, a NOEC of 106.75 mg /kg soil dry weight could be extrapolated for the pentanols. Nevertheless, we would expect that a chronic study with Eisenia fetida on pentanol would result in a much higher NOEC value.However, this NOEC based on worst-case assumptions has been used for the PNECsoil derivation.

 

Toxicity to terrestrial arthropods

The substance shows no effects up to the limit concentration in acute aquatic toxicity tests. Furthermore, the substance shows no potential for accumulation in soil due to its ready biodegradable properties, its LogPow value and is not ionisable. Therefore, an impact on terrestrial organisms is very unlikely and thus, studies on soil organisms are not required.

Toxicity to birds

No data on terrestrial toxicity are available. However, in chapter R.10 of the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment (ECHA 2008, p. 42) concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), it is laid down that "the chemicals of concern with respect to secondary poisoning include lipophilic organic chemicals and some metal compounds". The substance shows a low bioaccumulative (log Pow = 1.29) potential. Thus, a relevant and considerable exposure of birds is not expected. Therefore, and for reasons of animal welfare studies on bird toxicity are not provided.
