Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 2013-03-12 to 2013-03-18
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to a method recommended in international standards. No deviation was reported. The substance is considered to be adequately characterised with its purity. Therefore full validation applies.
Reason / purpose:
reference to other study
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Qualifier:

Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Qualifier:

Guideline:
other: ISO 304-1985 (E)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. certificate)
Remarks:
Inspected on 10 July 2012 / Signed on 30 November 2012
Type of method:

Key result
Surface tension:
67.6 mN/m
Temp.:
21.6 °C
Conc.:
1.69 mg/L

Water (calibration)

Temperature = 21.6°C

Sample 1: calibration factor = 1.001 (mean of 6 measurements)

Sample 2: calibration factor = 1.001 (mean of 6 measurements)

Test item

Temperature = 21.6 ± 0.5 ºC

Sample 1: 67.9 mN/m (mean of 5 measurements) = 68.0 mN/m corrected pH = 5.1

Sample 2:

67.1 mN/m (mean of 5 measurements)

= 67.2 mN/m corrected

pH = 5.7

As each (corrected) surface tension value was within 0.5 mN/m of the mean (corrected) value, the mean (corrected) value was considered to be acceptable as the endpoint of the test.

Conclusions:
According to EU A5 criteria, as the result is above the threshold value of 60 mN/m, the substance is NOT considered to have surface-active potential under the experimental conditions.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of the test substance was measured under GLP according to OECD 115/EU A5 guidelines, ring method, at 90% of the saturation solubility (calculated test concentration). Two replicates were performed, and the mean of the consistent values was corrected with calibration factor from water.

The surface tension of the test substance is 67.6 mN/m, at ca 1.7 mg/L and 20°C.

Description of key information

Surface tension = 67.6 mN/m, at 90% saturation expected, and 21.6°C

According to EU A5 criteria, as the result is above the threshold value of 60 mN/m, the substance is NOT considered to have surface-active potential under the experimental conditions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
67.6
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
1.7

Additional information

A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EC method and under GLP, is available. It is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key value for purpose of CSA.
