Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Based on the results obtained in biodegradation tests performed according to OECD 301D (82% at day 28), Isodecyl acrylate was considered to be readily biodegradable.

Additional information

Two biodegradation tests were performed according to slightly modified OECD Test Guidelines (OECD, 1992). The tests were modified to permit measurements after day 28 (van Ginkel and Stroo 1992). The bioavailability in the tests was also improved according to methods described in ISO 10634 (1995) and by van Ginkel et al. (2008). A biodegradation of 56% at day 28 was obtained in a test using dichloromethane as inert carrier and activated sludge as inoculum. In a second test, biodegradation value of 82% was observed at day 28 by using Tween 80 as inert carrier and river water as inoculum. This result was supported by the biodegradation value obtained for an analogue, 2-propylheptyl acrylate (60 -70% at Day 28). Therefore, Isodecyl acrylate was considered to be readily biodegradable.
