Description of key information

Readily biodegradable, but failing 10-day window.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The biodegradability of 3,7 -dimethyloctan-1 -ol was assessed in a 28 days guideline study according to OECD 301 B using activated sludge from a municipal sewage plant. The test substance was found to degrade 70-80 % CO2/ThCO2 after an exposure period of 28 days but failed the 10 -d windows.

In another 29 days guideline study according to OECD 301 F using domestic activated sludge as inoculum the substance was found to be moderately biodegradable because the pass level of 60 % was attained after 29 days instead of 28 days and the 10 -d-window was failed.

In a study conducted with a close structural analogue of the substance (3,7 -dimethyloctan-3 -ol) under same test conditions and according to OECD 301 F as well, it was found to be readily biodegradable (60 - 70% biodegradation after 28 days).

Taking into account all three studies it can be concluded, that 3,7 -dimethyloctan-1 -ol will readily biodegrade in the aquatic environment but fails to meet the 10 -d criteria.
